I struggle with pants. A loaded statement, open to various interpretations, decidedly, but true nonetheless. When it comes to outfits, I’ve always considered the bottom half of a look to be an afterthought. Perhaps this stems from my never-ending frustration with finding jeans that fit just right (doesn’t everyone?), but the end result is that I have my go-to outfit finishers from the waist down—black jeans, blue jeans, yoga pants—and I never really vary from those tried and trues.
Clearly, I stepped out my comfort zone for this look. I got these pants at Zara in New York City while visiting for fashion week last winter. They traveled back to KC and…sat in my closet, waiting. Finally, this fall and winter I wore them a couple times and was pleasantly surprised how the looks came together. The moral of the story is to follow your instincts in regard to fashion. If a piece speaks to you, but it’s out of your usual modus operandi, maybe take the plunge and add it to your collection—especially if it’s a statement piece in an area of your wardrobe that is usually neutral territory (black leggings/skinny jeans territory for me).
