Stepping out of a comfort zone is a beautiful thing. This advice relates to so much of life. As my grandmother used to say, "If it doesn't give you butterflies in your stomach, you're doing it wrong." I don't necessarily think she was talking about clothes, but just as taking the plunge and moving to a new city or setting out solo on a road trip, creating an outfit that pushes your boundaries can be an empowering thing. I don't usually wear vintage often, but I have had this yellow blouse in my closet for as long as I can remember and I've wanted to style it for the past two years, but haven't had the guts.
Speaking of my grandma, it's her old blouse. After she passed away many years ago, I kept it. Her favorite color was yellow and I have many memories of her wearing this top. The same day that I shot these pictures, I had visited my mom at work. As I was leaving, I noticed this rad old jean jacket on the lost and found rack. Soon it became mine and a vintage themed outfit was born. Denim on denim is definitely outside my comfort zone. The trend is coming back, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I don't know if I have ever layered up in same wash denim and I almost reached for lighter wash shorts, but I really liked the end result! The shorts are not vintage, they are by my favorite shorts brand One Teaspoon (out of Australia, again, those Aussies know their stuff!). However this is the Cobain wash which is notorious for being sold out everywhere, so that sort of continues the vintage theme.
I found the shorts where I find so many things--eBay. In fact, the shoes and purse are also eBay finds. I am of the opinion that one can find almost anything on eBay if they look long and hard enough. Take these gladiator sandals for example. The Aiden Bootie by Sixty-Seven. I discovered them on a blog (deja vu here!) and it turns out they had a cult-like following...a few years earlier. Sold out everywhere, the humanity! After frantic scouring of eBay, one day they popped up when I searched, and for a fraction of their original cost. I did find the Aiden currently in stock from Zulily, but it is in silver, which for those of you who are inspired to really make a statement from this post, go for it! Zulily has such a great price on these shoes, I'm tempted to buy another color myself! Did I mention they are SUPER comfortable? :)
The Louis Vuitton bag is another eBay story. I love the bucket bag shape, it's hands-down my favorite shape for bags. I knew I wanted to invest in an LV, but after doing my research, I found out I liked the vintage model of the Petit Noe bucket bag more than the current style. When buying designer bags on eBay shop within the U.S., communicate with the seller before buying, and research authentication guides. This way you won't end up with a fake! In my case, this Petit Noe is in pristine condition, and I love the slight patina on the leather. It's better than a new one (in my opinion) and I snagged it at a fraction of the cost! I love the way it is kind of an ironic juxtaposition to have this luxe bag with a denim on denim outfit. Finishing the outfit with delicate gold jewelry just completes that high/low balanced look.
Since this post is vintage themed, by nature many of the exact products can't be linked, but I have rounded up some similar picks for you below!
I want to give special credit and love to my beautiful talented friend, Tori Swafford! She took these amazing images and there are more where that came from. I am so lucky to have her living nearby so I can produce quality images for Luna Elise. Anyone in the Kansas/Nebraska region looking for photography services, look no further than TC Photography! :)
