There are a lot of new trends hitting the scene lately. Fashion is taking a time machine backwards as it usually does. Flare leg jeans are popping up again--a tribute to the '60s and '70s. However, even more we are seeing a '90s influx on celebs and mall racks alike. First of all, this makes me feel rather old as I wore these styles when they were fresh. To have them be a "comeback" reminds me how depressingly close to 30 I am getting. This fact doesn't stop me from partaking in some of these new trends! No matter your age, you can always keep it fresh by picking and choosing amongst the current fads to fit your own personal style. I've rounded up some of my favorite looks that I have been implementing as well as some that I can't get into.
At first, I wasn't sold on the whole choker thing. As with most things, I just needed to give it some time. Eventually I realized it is a really cool way to pull together an outfit without weighing yourself down with too many heavy accessories in the summer. I love this leather and crystal choker by Show Me Your MuMu! I bought it, and I love the way it adds such a cool boho touch to any outfit.
This cute top comprises two of my favorite trends for this summer--denim and off the shoulder everything. I have been seeing so many rompers, dresses, and tops that feature off the shoulders necklines. It is such a summery and beachy look (and a neckline like that looks great with a choker!). Also, I love denim pieces for summer. A lightweight denim top like this would look great with white shorts. Plus, denim pairs so well with my favorite leopard print!
Espadrilles aren't a new trend for summer, but I definitely have been seeing this ankle wrap style popping up with more frequency. I do love this for summer, because of the fact that it's timeless. The ankle wrap feature is on-trend, but it's not so fad-y that it is going to look gauche in a few years time. This pair by Frye are in my sights. I need them!
Summer heat makes putting on make-up feel like torture, but there are nights when you want to look your best. This is where non-touring comes in! This beauty trend is the converse of a full face of contour and highlighting. With non-touring, you simply apply a primer, tinted moisturizer and a highlighter to your cheekbones. The goal is to have fresh, dewy skin that looks very natural. I am all about natural makeup--especially in the summer--so this is one trend I will definitely be taking part in.
When classic becomes trendy, it's always a good sign. As with the espadrilles, a solid color bikini in a classic cut is something you can't go wrong with. This set from PacSun is not only lovely, but it is also affordable. It comes in several beautiful, muted colors that will be on point summer after summer. I picked it up in olive green--so cute!
I'm Not Loving...
This trend came back around WAY too fast. I remember wearing denim mini skirts in high school. In my opinion, they were--and still are!!--uncomfortable, unflattering and a great way to let everyone see your underwear unintentionally. This is one trend I could do without reviving!
Flash tattoos aren't a new trend, per say, but rather one that has been overdone (again, my opinion!). All the Coachella madness of late and the general trend towards boho style has flash tattoos feeling a little stale. When they were unique, I was intrigued, now they are seen everywhere. As a person with a couple real tattoos, this may seem like a surprising opinion, but to me this seems like a trend that too many people jumped on board with.
Yes...Juicy Couture jumpsuits are coming back (insert screaming in horror emoji face here). I've seen several articles about this popping up lately. Apparently these overpriced lounge gear are back on the market. I was never into these even when they were trendy. Admittedly, this was probably because I couldn't afford the price tag, but even now I still don't get it.
The Jenner/Kardashian crowd and many bloggers have been seen stepping out in this style. Kim's look above is an extreme case--an Adidas active wear shirt under a silk dress and fur coat? I don't care for it. However, I am not jumping on the wagon for this trend for reasons that go beyond the aesthetic. First off, it is HOT in Kansas most of the season I would be wearing a spaghetti strap dress. I get sweaty and I don't want to add an extra layer to my ensemble. In addition, I don't particularly like layering tighter articles of clothing. While I haven't tried the trend personally, I think the combo of shirt under dress would be uncomfortable for me. All that being said, maybe I will try something like this in the Fall/Winter so I can make summer dresses cold weather appropriate.
This isn't a new trend either, but it seems like each summer the cut out bikinis get crazier and crazier. I am all for innovative new fashion, and I'm sure a lot of these suits look gorgeous on, but damn think of the tan lines!! Beyond that, having so many cut outs and straps can lead to some awkward situations if you have any form of "love handles" (all of us do!!!). It's one of my fashion laws that keeping it simple is always the best choice when in doubt.
That about does it for my summer trend hits and misses. I really enjoyed making this list and I hope it helps you sort out which trends you want to jump on and which you don't (even if some of your loves are on my nahh list!). Part of creating your own unique style is picking and choosing trends and not blindly following them all! ;)
