Fall fashions are hitting the stores and the excitement to pull out those sweaters is palpable. But summer isn't gone yet. I'm soaking up the last bit of it, hoping some of the sun's warmth and carefree rays will sink into my bones to last me through the season that must not be named (winter, yikes!). I love this summer outfit because it's comfy yet edgy. There is nothing better than a little black dress. This one from Urban Outfitters is great because it balances the short length and low back with a high neckline. Pairing it with a black bag really makes these Teva x Derek Lam sandals really pop. The shoes give the outfit a sporty, casual vibe which makes it a good day-to-night choice.
This shoot with Rebecca of Mira Visu Photography was so much fun! The day was marked by scanning the graffiti for inappropriate anatomical parts, disappointing some homeless men and rolling around in a river flanked by cacti. We took the series above at the Graffiti Park at Castle Hill in Austin. I was in town for the yearly Writer's League of Texas Agents & Editors Conference, so I knew I couldn't pass up an opportunity to shoot with Mira Visu! We missed Josh, the husband component of this team of photographic genius, but more than made up for it later by hitting 6th Street and having adult Capri Suns on a rooftop!
Before I get into the outfit details, an embarrassing confession--for the longest time I was morally against wearing red and black because those were the school colors at my high school. I clung onto my wannabe rebel against the high school sports establishment position for WAY too long! Luckily, I came to my senses, because there is nothing better than a bold color paired with a solid black for an ensemble that pops.
This romper is the most gorgeous shade of bright red. It is from the online boutique Sabo Skirt. I buy so many cute things from Sabo, but there are a couple inconveniences with purchasing from there. First, the company is based out of Australia so their seasons are backwards. Second, they don't carry high stock in their ranges, so hot items sell out quickly. In light of this, I bought this romper in January (Aussie summer) and since then it is so out of stock, unfortunately. However, I will link some great substitute options at the end of the post!
The rest of this outfit is all about the accessories. A black bag and shoes with silver accents is tied together with a silver cuff bracelet. I have to talk about the bag--I splurged and bought this little beauty by Saint Laurent. Aside from a small stab of "f&*k I shouldn't buy this" guilt for about two seconds, I am so happy with this purchase. I first discovered this bag on Something Navy's blog and fell in love. It dresses up any outfit.
Finally, the other accessories making this outfit stand out aren't something you can buy online or at the store. I recently got another tattoo! It is a shaded moon phase down my upper spine. It was rather an impulse choice, but I love it. To me, it represents how while the moon goes in phases, it is still there and full even in the dark. This is metaphor for how I have always had the potential and strength in myself even throughout all my darker phases of my life.
I made another change which (illogically) made me more nervous than the tattoo. I got my hair cut and colored! Way back in the day, I used to be a bleach blonde. Not only did being that completely blonde wash my complexion out but it also damaged the heck out my hair. The breakage was so bad that it took FOREVER to grow out my hair. So I avoided the salon since I felt like my stylists had caused this issue anyway. I avoided the salon for four years! I gave myself trims at home, and clearly my hair became quite long. However, it was getting a big out of control. I made an appointment at Sweet Jane in Lincoln, NE, and it was the best decision ever! My hair feels so healthy and I love the bright baylayage for summer. Plus, even though three inches got chopped, my hair is still really long.
